The battery must be placed with the plus (+) sign up. If the battery compartment does not close easily, the battery is inserted incorrectly.

Note: Never force the batter door shut. It may permanently damage your Empower.

The Empower® uses size 10 / 10A zinc-air batteries. Please note the expiration date on the battery, and never leave exhausted batteries in the Empower, as they may leak and damage the device.

The life of the battery depends on a number of factors, such as the settings of your Empower and the number of hours used per day.

In rare cases, a new battery may be exhausted because it was not sealed properly. If your Empower does not work after replacing a battery, try inserting a different new battery and remember to wait a full minute after removing the pull-tab on the battery before use.

Always remove the battery from your Empower if it will not be used for a prolonged period of time.

CAUTION: Batteries can be harmful if swallowed. Be sure to keep batteries out of reach from children and pets. If a battery is accidentally swallowed, seek medical attention immediately, or call the National Battery Hotline collect at 202-625-3333.

Changing Programs

Empower® has four separate programs to accomodate the most common hearing situations.

ProgramFrequencies AmplifiedIndicator
1Amplification across all frequenciesOne beep
2High frequency focused amplificationTwo beeps
3Program 1 + increased noise reductionThree beeps
4Program 2 + increased noise reductionFour beeps

To change the amplification program on your Empower, press and hold the volume switch until the Empower beeps. The number of beeps indicates which program that the Empower is currently using

(2 beeps –> Program 2, 3 beeps –> Program 3, etc).

Empower remembers the current program and volume settings when the device is turned off so you do not need to fiddle with the controls every time you use the device, however it is important to experiment with the different programs in different noise environments when you initially use your Empower to get the most out of device.

Maintenance & Care

Daily cleaning is essential to keeping your Empower performing optimally.

  • Clean the tubing and tip of your Empower with the included cleaning wire attached to the cleaning tool.
    LE_Brush_Clening
  • The most common issue is small blockages of hardened earwax that have hardened in the tubing, blocking sound from getting to your ear. These blockages can be nearly invisible to the human eye. Running the cleaning wire through the tubing every day will make sure that your tubing lasts as long as possible.
  • Clean the body of your Empower daily with a tissue or soft cloth. and use the included brush to gently clean away wax and other debris. Do not use water, alcohol, or other liquid agent to clean the Empower as it may damage it.
  • Keep your ears clean. Earwax can clog up your Empower’s tubing and cause it to not work properly. For best results, it may be beneficial to clean your ears with an over-the-counter ear wash kit or visit your physician.
  • Avoid exposing Empower to excess moisture or heat. Do not use hair spray or a hair dryer while wearing Empower.
  • Avoid physical shock, such as dropping it on the ground.
  • Store your Empower in a cool dry place when not in use
  • If you are not going to use your Empower for a prolonged period of time, remove the battery to prevent any possible damage from corrosion

No Sound from Empower

  • Clean your tubing.

Your Empower relies on a thin tube and the Empower Tip to provide enhanced sound to your ear, as such a small amount of debris or hardened earwax can block the sound from your Empower completely. A cleaning wire has been including on your cleaning tool, and we recommend cleaning the tubing on a daily basis.

    How to clean your tubing

    1. Remove tubing from the device. It may be helpful to turn the tubing at a ninety degree angle and then use your fingernail to pop the tubing off.

NOTE: If you have a battery in the device, you should hear a whistle from the Empower. This is normal and a sound that indicates your Empower is working properly. Open the battery door fully to silence your device.

    2. Run the cleaning wire fully through the tubing and through the Empower Tip multiple times. Earwax and other blockages can be nearly invisible to the naked eye.
    3. Place the tubing back on your Empower and test. If the Empower still does not function correctly, check to see if the tubing
    4. If the Empower still does not function correctly, check to see if the tubing does not have any perforations or damage. If the Empower whistles without tubing on but does not produce sound with tubing, you may need to purchase new tubing. We recommend the tubing and tips are replaced every three months.
  • Make sure battery is inserted correctly (positive side up) and battery door is completely closed.
  • Make sure battery is fresh. If there is any doubt, try a new one (remember to remove the pull-tab on the battery surface and wait one full minute before using a new battery).
  • Check the battery contacts for corrosion.
  • Reseat the Empower Tip in your ear canal.
  • Check the tips for wax that may be blocking or for any signs of wear. Replace the tips if they appear stiff, bent, cracked, or frayed.
  • Humid environments, sweat, and moisture may clog the device and distort sounds. Consider using a hearing aid dehumidifier overnight.
  • If your problem persists, email us at customerservice@Empower.com with a description of your problem

Excessive Whistling

Empower makes a whistling sound when in the ear

  • Whistling (feedback) occurs when the amplified sound returns to the microphone and is re-amplfied.
  • You can confirm that the Empower is working properly by removing the device and covering the hole in the tubing tips with your finger (the whistling should stop). Try using the larger, Power Empower Tip that was included with your device for a better fit.
  • Sometimes feedback may occur when you have a blockage of wax in the ear canal, a stiff eardrum (from a cold, for example) or any condition that causes sound to be reflected from the ear canal. In these cases, the fit may be fine, and the feedback will disappear when the condition is corrected.
  • Check for any cracks in the tubing. For optimal performance, the tubing and ear tips should be changed every 3-6 months.
  • Try a program with a lower volume setting
  • Clean any wax that may be interfering with the tubing

Empower makes a whistling sound with no tubing attached

  • Whistling without tubing is a sign that your Empower is working properly.
  • Open the battery door to turn off your Empower and stop the feedback

Empower whistles intermittently

  • Check that the tubing is fully pushed onto the Empower and the Empower Tip is pushed fully onto the tubing. The end of Empower Tip should be flush with the end of the tubing when properly assembled sure the Empower
  • Make sure the Empower Tip is properly placed into the ear canal
  • Try using the larger, Power Empower Tip that was included with your device if the standard size is too small
  • Check the tips for wax that may be blocking or for any signs of wear. Replace the tips if they appear stiff, bent, cracked, or frayed.

If the problem persists, email us at customerservice@Empower.com with a description of your problem.

Getting the Most from Your Empower

To get the most out of your Empower, remember these 3 keys:

  1. ACCLIMATION

When you start using Empower, your brain has to learn how to listen to sounds that it has not had to process in years or has never processed.

This can be a big adjustment, but the human brain is an amazingly adaptable, and at any age age it can still can relearn to how to properly process these sounds, but it takes time and practice. Medical studies have shown that your brain requires several weeks to adjust to a new sound environment and become accustomed to your new Empower. During this time:

    • You may initially notice lots of background noises. These noises have always been a part of your environment, and in time your brain will tune out many of them.
    • You may find that a quiet environment is more comfortable in the beginning.
    • Gradually introduce new listening environments as your ears become accustomed to your Empower and remember to try all four programs.
    • The addition of new sounds in your life can be overwhelming. Try wearing your Empower for a short period each day and gradually extend the time that you wear them as you feel comfortable.
    • In noisy environments, you may find it easier to understand what is being said by facing the speaker.
    • Your own voice may sound too loud. This is very common for new users. Most people find that they get used to the level of their own voice in a few days.
    • You may also feel plugged up or feel like you’re talking in a barrel, especially if you are using the Power Empower Tip. This is called the occlusion effect is a normal reaction to having something in your ear canal. The sensation usually goes away in the first few weeks.

Using a Empower to its fullest can take practice and patience. Some people adjust very quickly, and most adapt within a few weeks. Please do not give up prematurely.

  2. QUALITY OF LIFE

Everyone is born with two ears for a reason. The brain takes the sound input from both ears to understand a particular sound or voice. It is best to maintain balance by wearing a Empower in each ear. By maintaining balanced amplification you will experience:

    • Significantly better understanding of speech and conversation.
    • Less overall background noise amplification.
    • Better hearing and understanding in noisy situations.
    • Better localization of the direction of sounds.
    • Listening will be more pleasing and effortless.
    • Sound is balanced and more natural, especially music.
  3. THE COMFORT ZONE

Everyone is born with two ears for a reason. The brain takes the sound input from both ears to understand a particular sound or voice. It is best to maintain balance by wearing a Empower in each ear. By maintaining balanced amplification you will experience:

    • Empower comes with two different sizes of of Empower Tips. If you hear a whistling noise when the device is on and in your ear, you may need to use the Power Empower Tip, which is included in the accessories bag.
    • It can take time for the Empower to feel comfortable. Try wearing it for 30-60 minutes a day at the beginning and gradually extend the time that you wear them each day.
